Private donations are critical to helping Haiti. Although government agencies provide assistance after natural disasters, charity experts say private donations will be critical to helping Haiti.
Here is how you can contribute with some of of the organizations:
- The American Red Cross: People can contribute online ( http://redcross.org ), or make a US$ 10 donation by sending a text message with the word "Haiti" to 90999.
- The United Nations World Food Program: Donations can be made online (http://wfp.org ).
- The Salvation Army: People can also contribute online (http://salvationarmyusa.org ).
- Action Against Hunger: Donations can be made online (http://actionagainsthunger.org )
Note: FBI warns of people claiming to be earth-quake survivors and fraudulent, unsolicited e-mails seeking help. People should also verify the legitimacy of organizations and resist giving out personal information.
